The PL2303 provides a convenient solution for connecting an RS232 full-duplex asynchronous serial device to any Universal Serial Bus (USB) compatible host. Highly compatible PL2303 drivers can simulate the traditional COM port on most operating systems, allowing existing COM port-based applications to migrate easily and be USB-ready without having to rewrite the software application from the COM port.
Leveraging USB mass transfer mode, large data buffers and automatic flow control, the PL2303 is able to achieve higher throughput compared to traditional Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) ports. When real RS232 signaling is not required, rate greater than 115200 bps can be used for even better performance. The PL2303 flexible baud rate generator could be programmed to generate any rate between 75 bps and 6 Mbps.
The PL2303 is designed exclusively for mobile and embedded solutions, providing a small footprint that can easily fit into any portable device and connector. With very low power consumption in operating or standby mode, the PL2303 is perfect for high-power bus-powered operation for connected devices. The flexible signal level requirement on the RS232-like serial port side also allows the PL2303 to connect directly to any 3.3V ~ 1.8V device.
