The Diamond SP-3000 is a coaxial surge protector designed to provide additional protection for transceivers, receivers, amplifiers and other equipment connected to outdoor antennas.
Installed in series with the coaxial feed line, it helps divert transient overvoltages caused by nearby lightning activity, static build-up and other electrical impulses away from the connected radio equipment and towards ground.
Its wide DC–3000 MHz frequency range makes it suitable for HF, VHF, UHF and microwave applications up to 3 GHz. With an insertion loss of no more than 0.2 dB and an SWR below 1.1:1, it has minimal impact on normal station performance.
The SP-3000 handles up to 200 W PEP, has a 50 Ω impedance and uses two N-female connectors. Its specified impulse-wave discharge capacity is 6000 A.
An integrated grounding terminal allows the unit to be connected to the station earth system. The device also provides DC pass-through, making it suitable for compatible installations that supply power to mast-mounted accessories through the coaxial cable
The SP-3000 is installed in series with the coaxial line:
Antenna → coaxial cable → SP-3000 → coaxial cable → equipment
It should preferably be fitted close to the cable entrance point or near the station’s main grounding system.
The grounding terminal must be connected using a short, direct conductor of suitable cross-section. Avoid coils, unnecessary cable length and sharp bends. The connection should be integrated into a correctly designed grounding and equipotential bonding system.
For outdoor installation, protect the connectors and body against moisture with self-amalgamating tape or another suitable weather-sealing system. This version should not be regarded as waterproof without additional protection.
The Diamond SP-3000 does not replace a complete lightning-protection system and cannot guarantee equipment survival in the event of a direct strike to the antenna or tower. It is primarily intended to limit transient surges and currents induced by nearby lightning activity.
It should be used together with proper grounding, equipotential bonding, AC mains surge protection and protection for control and data cables. Whenever safe and practical, physically disconnect antenna cables during thunderstorms.
